Fletcher Hartz Nature Trail

Fletcher Hartz Nature Trail

The Fletcher Hartz Nature Trail is part of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church grounds and was developed with gifts and memorials to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Day School honoring our classmate Fletcher Hartz. The meandering trail consists of a north loop of 0.2 miles and a south loop of 0.33 miles. A sign designates the trailhead and maps the area.

As you walk the trail, you will see the results of cooperative efforts by many groups and individuals. Saint Mark’s Scout Troop #7 helped clear and develop the trail as an Eagle project.  Jacksonville AFB Troop #170 built benches as an Eagle Project.  Master naturalists from the community mapped the trail and educated the staff on maintenance and grading. The design of the trail and placement of structures was developed by an alumni of the school who is a landscape architect. A resident of Leawood built the outdoor classroom and the bridges. Parish members, Day School teachers, parents and children spent many days and weeks helping to clear the trail. Donated daffodils facilitated by P. Allen smith were planted by the Day School classes.

The neighborhood is welcome to use the trail any weekday after 2:00 and on weekends. We appreciate your respectful adherence to our minimal rules.

It is our hope that generations of children of all ages will benefit from exploring nature with a ‘leave no trace’ culture.
